Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be understood as a way to accept all experiences without judgment. In short, when an experience happens, we as individuals can accept it with an open heart.

Advantages of Mindfulness

Feldman and Kuyken (2019) suggest that practicing mindfulness allows people to:

  • Be more responsive: More willing to face the challenges ahead, instead of escaping from them

  • Be more aware of one’s emotions, feelings, and thoughts

  • Be more aware of one’s destructive and repetitive habits which can make one stressed

  • Change one’s perception towards stress: Knowing that there is distress, but that these stresses will end eventually

  • See oneself as worthy and valuable

Why Young Adults?

Mindfulness teaches people how to respond to circumstances thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. This skill is good for young adults who often face:

  • Increased responsibilities

  • High-pressure expectations

  • Emotional break-ups, stressful social situations, and arguments with friends

  • Emerging symptoms of mental health conditions
